Atelier des Sources

Atelier des Sources

This micro-négociant business is run by Simon Tyrrell, Mark Barnett, Charles Derain of Les Deux Cols and Thomas Schmittel of Domaine des Lises in Crozes-Hermitage. Using their deep knowledge of the Rhône Valley and Languedoc, they source high quality grapes from what they regard as exceptional vineyard sites. The team consult regularly with their growers throughout the year and harvesting is done by the Atelier team. The grapes are transported to the Deux Cols winery where the red wines are fermented in stainless steel with further ageing in Burgundy barrels and 600 litre demi-muids. Their white is both fermented and aged in demi-muid.

The story of Atelier des Sources began many years ago.

Simon and Mark, friends from university, had long spoken about setting up a wine business, firstly on the distribution side and then winemaking. Fast forward twenty years and those ideas have come to fruition with the creation of Atelier des Sources.

Charles, Simon’s long time business partner in Les Deux Cols, joined in 2019 and at the same time Thomas, came on board to add an extra layer of experience and expertise to the team.

Together, they each bring skills, knowledge and know how to help build Atelier des Sources in its aim of becoming a quality focussed, detail obsessed, grape purchasing micro-négociant.

Farming is biodynamic.

Viticulture

Saint Gervais, France Atelier Roussanne for ‘La Lumière’ Situated in the northern part of the Gard, the appellation received its villages status in 1974 and covers only 62 hectares of vineyard overlooking the Cèze river. The first site lies on the south facing slopes on the eastern side of the village. The soils are red clay/limestone and the row orientation is east/west. The second site lies a little further to the south east, on more alluvial type soils – stonier and with more sand mixed in the clay. This parcel of vineyard is situated in the hills above the villages of Saint Gervais and Saint Nazaire at an altitude of 220 metres. There is 1/3 rd hectare of very old Bourboulenc, planted in 1946 on a very complex soil structure of loess, sand, loam and clay over limestone. The parcel faces south and is exposed to the Mistral to the north. Atelier Syrah for ‘Les Allers-Retours’ This small, south facing vineyard lies on the eastern side of the village of Tulette, in the Drôme Provençale. In 2016 Tulette was included as part of the new Côtes du Rhône Villages commune of Suze la Rousse. The Syrah vines are 25 years old and are planted on a soil of red clay over limestone with a scattering of small pebbles on the surface. The farming is biodynamic. Another small vineyard, sited to the north east of the village of Tulette, just off the road to Nyons at an altitude of 140 metres. The Carignan and Grenache vines are 50 years old and face east/south east on sandy clay soils over limestone. Farming is biodynamic

Winemaking

Harvest time is decided by Thomas, Charles and Simon and the picking itself is done by Atelier’s own team. The key factors for harvest date are dictated by tasting the berry maturity – with a search for fruit, freshness and skin and pip ripeness. The grapes are hand harvested in 13kg bins and then transported to Atelier’s winery which it shares with Domaine des Deux Cols. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks for the reds and 600 litre oak demi-muids for the white. Further aging for the reds is done primarily in 228 litre Burgundy barrels as well as demi-muids whilst the white remains on its lees in demi-muid until bottling.
