Bodegas Amaren

Bodegas Amaren

Founded in 1995 as a tribute to Angeles, Juan Luis Cañas’ mother, this 52 hectare property is located in the town of Valbuena in the Rioja Alavesa. Angeles was known as a tireless worker who devoted her life to the vineyard and working alongside her husband Luis. The estate is planted with old vines (30-60 years old) of Graciano, Tempranillo, Garnacha, Viura and Malvasia on slopes at between 450-600 metres above sea level. The grapes are hand harvested, crushed and destemmed and then fermented in tank before being aged partly in American oak and partly in French oak, twelve months for the Crianza and sixteen months for Angeles de Amaren.

“Each wine has its own personality”

Each tells its own story, offering for your enjoyment the tale of its origins from the soil, its varieties, climate and character.

Each and every one of them has its moment, its role and only demands the opportunity to express, in a glass, its full potential.

Viticulture

In Bodegas Amaren, the field is a way of life. They are true experts in working the vineyard, and the plots to them are the pieces of the perfect puzzle. The winery is located in Samaniego (Rioja Alavesa), and is surrounded by 65 hectares of vineyards aging between 35 years and 110 years old. These small plots are characterized by their locations; lands of calcareous clay which originate from low fertility. With a unique microclimate, the vineyard honors the winemaking tradition of the region by offering low production, bunches and grapes of small size and excellent quality. Its department of viticulture is key to getting things rolling, all of them true artisans of the vineyard, work meticulously to maintain control over each plot. Given the characteristics of the vineyard, all the work is done by hand and in some cases, with animal traction. It is about nurturing the land in the most natural way possible and following the guidelines of a rational viticulture to preserve the great diversity of animal and plant species that populate each plot and respecting the vineyard and its surroundings, in order to collect healthy grapes by hand and produce healthy wines.

Winemaking

The harvest is made in the month of October. The grapes harvested in boxes enter Bodegas Amaren and go directly into cold storage where they remain overnight at 6 degrees. The objective is to produce a pre-fermentative intracellular maceration in the grapes, which will help to extract their primary aromas as much as possible. All the grapes that enter Bodegas Amaren go through the double selection table of bunches and grains. With AMAREN, Juan Luis Cañas chooses to go back to the origins of his roots, and elaborate the wines in concrete tanks, as was done in the days of Ángeles. The deposits that are currently used in the cellar are of small capacity (15,000 L), fully restored with epoxy resin, and a temperature control system. The concrete protects the wines from thermal shocks, allows a greater extraction of the fruit, and a natural stabilization for the wine. VINIFICATION Hand-picked grapes that pass through a double sorting table (bunches and then berries). Only intact berries areselected. Alcoholic fermentation is conducted in concrete vats. AGEING Aged in barrels for 12 months. 50% in new American oak barrels. 50% in second-year French oak barrels.
