Tenuta Le Calcinaie

Three kilometres from San Gimignano, in the glorious Tuscan landscape, is where Simone Santini runs this 12 ha estate. The property takes its name from the soil composition, with layers of limestone being found about half a metre underground, marine deposits from the Pliocene era. Simone founded the estate in 1986 by planting his first hectare of Vernaccia on the parts of the land where he found sandier topsoils with numerous fossils to give whites of greater tension and freshness. He began planting his Sangiovese and other reds at higher altitude in 1989, soils where there was more clay to look for greater power and colour. Farming is organic and winemaking is increasingly more hands off with ‘UVA’ being made without any added sulphites.

Simone Santini, a passionate wine technician, is the owner; he planted his first hectare with the vines of Vernaccia, the vineyard “Vigna ai Sassi” in 1986 and in 1989 he planted 7,000 square meters with red grape varieties. The 1993 vintage of Teodoro, 100% Sangiovese was the first wine that Simone produced (only one barrique was bottled), followed by the 1995 vintage of Vernaccia di San Gimignano. The total vineyard extension is now 12 hectares and the average production is 70,000 bottles/year. Since 1995 viticulture follows the organic protocol, the vineyards and the wines are certified organic according to the EU and NOP regulations.

Simone has dedicated his whole life to create and care for his own vineyards and wines.

We produce a Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG, Vernaccia  di San Gimignano Riserva DOCG, Chianti Colli Senesi DOCG, Chianti Colli Senesi Riserva and four IGT proprietary wines. Ingredienti: Uva” is a proprietary wine, Sangiovese 100% without the use of sulphites.

Viticulture

Tenuta le Calcinaie exclusively vinifies grapes from its own vineyards to make its own wine. In 2006 the new cellar was completed, it is build underground so that the temperature is kept even, where the wines can mature away from thermal changes and follow natural aging. The composition of the soil – limestone layers topped by layers of clay, sand and fossil – produces minerals, structed and flavorful whites. The delicate skin of the Vernaccia grape is protected from the sun by the north-eastern exposure of the vineyards. The red grapes are grown on the higher part of the Estate and the soils are skeletal and made up of brown and red clay, this enhances the power and the colour in the wines. The altitude of the vineyards is between 200 and 250 meters above sea level.

Winemaking

The vineyards of the Estate Tenuta Le Calcinaie are located in five different terroirs to enhance the maximum expression of each grape grown. Four are located in the territory of San Gimignano (those from the centre of the farm, Canneta, Montauto and Santa Lucia) the fifth one (Santa Maria) is located in the town of Colle Val d’Elsa. Tenuta le Calcinaie exclusively vinifies grapes from its own vineyards to make its own wine.
